Fresh Expression?
I wanted to comment on Sarahs post below... but the word verification system seems to be screwed so, here it is as a post...
Sorry Sarah... but you seem to have missed my point... but in a way you echo it... Mission Shaped Church (I think) coined the phrase "Fresh Expressions" to find a "label" for mission initiatives that seek to nurture/plant/seed churches that may develop an expression of being which does not reflect that of "traditional" church... perhaps even existing church... but the phrase could be and often is misused (IMHO) to describe simply a change in worship style or genre and does nothing to make clear the DNA of a MISSION shaped church. Steve Croft said that there are over 300 F.Exps registered on the site but reading the pen-portraits in the F.exps newspaper I was amazed how few of the featured ones were either Missional or even Fresh! Is a soul survivor style Youth service or a Taize evening really a "fresh expression" in the MSC context? My problem is that we are keen to shout about F.Exp without really examining the criteria, the DNA. Is it Mission shaped, does it engage with culture and community... really!?
One way of putting it is to me F Exp is not about exploring fresh expressions IN Church, but fresh expressions OF Church.
Lets please stop kidding ourselves and be honest and rigorous... I honestly don't care what anyone does in Church.... ultimately it makes b****r all difference to someone who would never dream of crossing the threshold in a lifetime of sundays!
Now THATS controversial ;-) maybe!
